Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Campus Principal / Executive Director of Athletics

We are seeking an experienced, student-centered educator to serve as Head Boys Wrestling Coach and classroom teacher at La Joya High School. The ideal candidate will have a passion for both academic instruction and athletic leadership, with the ability to inspire students through high expectations, structure, and positive relationships.

Qualifications

Education/ Certification

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (required)
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in any secondary content area (required)
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements (preferred for team transportation)
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification and completion of UIL-required safety trainings (must be current or obtained prior to start of coaching duties)

Experience:

  • Classroom teaching experience at the high school level

  • Prior wrestling coaching experience required; head coaching experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of wrestling techniques, UIL regulations, tournament preparation, and athlete conditioning

  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead a competitive program with high academic and behavioral standards

Instructional - High School Teacher

  • Plan and deliver rigorous TEKS-aligned instruction using district-provided curriculum and instructional platforms (e.g., DMAC)
  • Support all learners, including English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and at-risk students
  • Participate in PLCs, campus staff development, and curriculum planning
  • Build relationships with families and collaborate with student support teams
  • Promote college, career, and military readiness in classroom instruction

Athletic - Head Boys Wrestling Coach

  • Lead the boys wrestling program from sub-varsity through varsity levels
  • Develop and implement practice plans, match strategies, and tournament preparation
  • Ensure wrestler safety, discipline, and sportsmanship in all program activities
  • Organize and oversee team travel, tournament entries, and compliance with UIL rules
  • Supervise and develop assistant coaches and volunteers
  • Maintain accurate records of student eligibility and monitor academic progress via Skyward
  • Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff to support athlete development
  • Engage with middle school programs to develop a strong pipeline of future athletes
  • Serve as a visible leader at practices, matches, athletic meetings, and school events

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by campus administration or athletic department
  • Adhere to all La Joya ISD board policies, procedures, and administrative regulations

Compensation

  • Teacher Salary: Based on the La Joya ISD Teacher Pay Scale, determined by verified years of experience and certifications
  • Coaching Stipend: Annual stipend per the La Joya ISD Athletics Stipend Schedule (Head Coach -Wrestling)

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to supervise athletic practices, demonstrate drills, and travel with student-athletes
  • Physical stamina required for extended hours during game days, tournaments, and training periods

Work Environment:

  • Classroom, gymnasium, and athletic facilities
  • Evening and weekend duties expected, especially during basketball season
  • Regular contact with students, parents, coaching staff, and community members
