Description
Under general supervision, the Transportation Crew Leader provides direct and indirect leadership over a variety of personnel in road/street maintenance, maintenance/ installation of traffic signs, bridge maintenance and pavement markings. This position also maintains records on materials and equipment used and assists in training of crew members. Work is performed with limited supervision.
Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.
Examples of Duties
- Provides leadership to crew by planning, prioritizing, and assigning duties; provides guidance to co-workers with less experience; reads and interprets plans and blueprints; trains employees with less knowledge; assists with evaluations of employees.
- Repairs City Streets, concrete, and bridge structures; trims trees from roadways and bridges; builds barricades; cleans vacant lots; cleans around bridge features; performs regular rounds within the city to clean trash and mow city ROW.
- Makes routine trash pickup at all Public Transit bus stops. Directs the setup of work sites, including traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and arrow boards. Fabricates, installs, and maintains signs using Traffic CAD software; installs sign poles and pavement markings; performs and monitors bridge maintenance, to include inspection, repairs and painting, etc. of bridges as outlined by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports.
- Operates heavy equipment, light equipment and power tools; including but not limited to paving machine, oil distributor, backhoes, front end loaders, motor grader, skid steer, steel and pneumatic rollers, and water/dump trucks to perform street maintenance, construction, and bridge maintenance tasks.
- Keeps records by writing daily work orders; records daily time sheets on computer; writes daily log sheet on vehicles; writes up incident reports. Utilizes knowledge and equipment in addressing other department needs. Ensures the safety of all workers. Responds to all types of weather related and ROW emergencies. Responds to requests for information from the public, investigates complaints, and recommends corrective action to resolve complaints.
Experience and Training
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years of full-time experience in traffic signs and markings and street/bridge maintenance, including but not limited to safe backhoe, loader, and other equipment operation, roadway and bridge inspection, signs and markings, and street/bridge repair.
Certificates and Licenses Required
- Valid Class A Texas driver license with Tanker Endorsement.
- Possession of backhoe, skid steer, and flagger / work zone certification upon hire or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
- Completion of TEEX Bridge Maintenance Training course within six (6) months of hiring (if applicable).
- Completion of Street Maintenance Education courses (if applicable).
- This position may require you to have or acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL). Federal law requires all CDL holders register with the USDOT Clearinghouse before operating a commercial vehicle. You will be required to enroll in the clearinghouse and sign a consent form allowing the City to run your name through the cleraninghouse as a condition of employment.
