The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 to work as a member of the Olympic Region Highway Maintenance Program. Under the direction of the Maintenance Specialist 5 or Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead, this position is responsible for safely and effectively performing journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, operation, and reconstruction of over 650 bridges in WSDOT's Olympic Region in a condition as near as possible to the condition of its initial construction or subsequent improvement, and to provide critical support to the safe operation of the agency's bridges. This position would have public safety and the safety of fellow employees as a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 will:

  • Perform maintenance and structural repairs on floating, moving, and fixed structures on an ongoing basis and in emergencies when damage is caused by the motoring public or acts of nature. This includes regular weekly trips with overnight stays. 
  • Diagnose deficiencies and repair/replace bridge components. 
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) such as drain cleaning, bridge deck sealing, painting, expansion joint cleaning and bridge cleaning. Maintain, modify, and repair components of bridge structures. 
  • Utilize the Spill Control and Countermeasure Plan to control and prevent generation of hazardous wastes. 
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches. 
  • Develops solutions for repair and maintenance problems. 
  • Clear logs and other large debris away from critical moving parts of the bridges. 
  • Enter and utilize data in Maintenance Productivity Enhancement Tool (M-PET) and Bridge Engineering Information System (BEIST) to document both programs generated preventive and corrective maintenance items completed, and non-system generated work accomplished. 
  • Perform maintenance level inspections of bridges and components. 
  • Operate specialized equipment such as small boats, man lifts and Under Bridge Inspection Trucks. 
  • Promote a safe work environment and identify safety improvement opportunities. 
  • Remain current on the Department's Safety Program and attend safety training as required. 
  • Wear and maintain all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for each task. 
  • Complete Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASPs) daily. 
  • Adhere to safety policies and maintain diligence in performing work in a safe manner. 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years' experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 with experience in heavy construction, carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical or millwright.

OR

Journey level standing in a construction trade as attested by:

  • Completion of recognized apprenticeship; OR-
  • Full journey status in a trade union; OR-
  • Four (4) years of experience as a full-time helper to a journey worker in the specified trade. 

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate vehicles in Washington State or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Skilled in the use of radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to perform work at elevated heights, above 100 feet over land or water, and/or in a confined environment, as well as traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Possession of an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating and performing preventative maintenance with vehicles 15,000 GVW or greater.
  • Demonstrated experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for trouble shooting, to include electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Overnight travel may be required.
  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2025.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
