NORTHWEST INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

Job Title: Bus Router (2419)

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Transportation Director/Operations Manager

Pay Grade: B02

Duty Days: 235

Dept./School: Transportation

Date Created/Revised: 05/2021

Primary Purpose:

Accurately build, coordinate, and maintain regular and SPED routes

Qualifications:

Education/Certification/License:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Some college preferred
  • Valid CDL with passenger, school bus, air brake, and safety endorsements
  • 20-hour TEA Safety Certification class
  • First Aid and CPR Certification class

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in multitask environment
  • Ability to quickly gain knowledge of a variety of computer-based programs to facilitate job responsibilities
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Google, internet maps, and basic internet navigation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to ensure positive relations with all patrons
  • Consistently flexible and open to changes
  • Detail-oriented
  • Capable of responding in emergency situations
  • Ability to drive a school bus or monitor
  • Ability to pass annual and random DOT (Department of Transportation) physical/drug testing
  • Ability to physically perform a front and back door bus evacuation
  • Ability to physically perform CPR and First Aid techniques on the ground or floor
  • Ability to walk the equivalent of at least one mile daily
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver effectively in a school bus

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience driving a school bus preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist in scheduling, coordinating, and maintaining routes in assigned area to include the McKinney/Vento Program
  • Support drivers and monitors assigned to your area
  • Instruct drivers and monitors as to their routes and schedules
  • Assist in maintaining route schedules
  • Recommend route and driver changes as necessary
  • Assist in coordinating after school and summer school programs
  • Assist with student count and route mileage for local and state reports
  • Work with School Bus Routing Software
  • Drive or monitor on a school bus when necessary
  • Complete other duties as assigned by Operations Manager

Working Conditions:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Continual sitting, reaching, kneeling, squatting, and repetitive hand and arm motions
  • Prolonged use of computer
  • Intermittent walking the equivalent of at least one mile daily
  • Work outside and inside
  • Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes
  • Frequent moderate lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds)
  • Work with frequent interruptions
