Full Description

Operates a variety of contractor's equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, water, and storm drainage systems. Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies. Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, backhoe, man-lift, dump truck, paver, bull dozier and street sweeper. Operates jackhammers, mowers, and other small equipment and tools to maintain street and utility systems. Conducts a daily inspection of tire air pressures, fluid levels, air tanks, hydraulic fluids, transmission fluids, power steering, lights, and other critical parts of a solid waste collection vehicle prior to the execution of the daily tasks. Washes collection vehicles. Works with and assists crews in digging ditches, pole holes, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work with a backhoe or necessary equipment. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Ability to work successfully in extreme hot and/or extreme cold temperatures; excessive humidity; slippery and uneven walking surfaces, excessive noise, and other extreme conditions such as noxious fumes, moving heavy machinery, etc. Perform other duties as assigned and/or required.

Qualifications

High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, e.g., machinery, equipment operation, etc. Four years of experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, two of which must have been related to sewer or street systems. CDL Class A is required. The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally may be asked to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations, and working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street and utility maintenance work. Ability to maintain accurate records, type and enter data accurately. Ability to effectively communicate on a one-on-one basis with others. Ability to maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, department officials and the public. Ability to report to work each scheduled day, and on time.
