Job Overview: Complete tasks and assignments within the Public Works Department associated with construction, operation, maintenance, cleaning and control of the water, wastewater collection and treatment systems; organize and maintain tools, equipment, and materials; operate heavy and light equipment and trucks; snow removal; parks and grounds maintenance, routine monitoring and repairs, and identify and label underground public utility mains.

Maximize Your Impact: The Responsibilities You'll Own:

• Water treatment and analysis. Operate and maintain pumps and motors that move water through filtration systems. Monitor indicators and make adjustments as necessary.
• Read meters and gauges to make sure that plant equipment is working properly. Take samples and run tests to determine the quality of the water being produced.
• Installation of residential water and sewer services
• Performing routine maintenance and repair work on pumps, electric motors, valves, and other plant equipment.
• Identify underground utilities by reading and interpreting utility maps and prints. Operate electronic detection equipment to locate and mark underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits. Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.
• Responds to complaints of stray or dangerous animals; and assists in recovery of animals.
• Assist with parks and grounds maintenance.
• Performs work for special events (e.g., Pow Wow) to include grounds maintenance, garbage control, pest control and vendor set up/tear down.
• Assist with snow plowing and removal.

Job Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of technical school program for water operators and two years of related experience. An additional one year of experience may be substituted for technical training.
• Class SD Wastewater Collections license (or ability to obtain within 6 mo. of employment).
• Class D Water Supply System Operator (or ability to obtain within 6 mo. of employment).
• Class A CDL Driver's License Preferred - training provided by SMSC within 1 year of hire.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Industrial Truck Driving permit may be required (forklift).
• Inside (sheltered) work. - Percent of Time: 30%
• Outside (unsheltered) work - Percent of Time: 70%
• Exposed to hazards (temperature extremes, fumes, odors, noise, etc.) - Percent of Time: 10% - Fumes, Odors, Temperature extremes (As related to climate conditions. May work in sub-zero conditions in winter or excessive heat in the summer in a non-climate controlled environment).
• On feet or standing - Percent of Time: 50%

• Confined space entry; bending, crawling, kneeling, squatting; twisting, pushing, pulling - Percent of Time: 75%
