The Central Maintenance Garage is hiring a skilled mechanic to maintain and repair light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles.

Position Details:

  • Full-time schedule: Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Must obtain a Class A CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire
  • Residency required within 30 miles of Sioux City limits, including parts of Nebraska and South Dakota
  • Civil Service position-qualified applicants will complete a written exam
  • Minimum of two to three years of hands-on experience in automotive mechanics and repair is required

Duties

  • Performs major overhaul and repair of automotive heavy truck and heavy equipment engines, transmissions and motors.
  • Performs overhaul and repair of small engines and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency service calls from the field to repair equipment.
  • Diagnoses engine malfunctions and initiates repairs using computerized diagnostic systems and tools.
  • Inspects vehicles and performs routine preventative maintenance, tune-ups, oil changes and brake repairs; repair and change tires.
  • Performs welding and body fabrication work.
  • Uses computer to access vehicle work order history.
  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic pumps, cylinders and hoses.
  • Cleans and maintains shop/garage areas, equipment and tools.
  • Repairs or replaces mechanisms and parts as needed.
  • Delivers and picks up parts and vehicles.
  • Maintains good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to all requests for service.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Qualifications

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Job Knowledge: Complete working knowledge of the assembly, adjustment, tear down, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive vehicles, trucks and specialized automotive equipment; knowledge and skill in the use of the common tools and equipment used in automotive maintenance and repair. Ability to troubleshoot, inspect and diagnose problems and malfunctions of vehicles and equipment, ability to interpret and follow drawings, schematics and repair charts, ability to develop and maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to employees. Requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers (external and internal) and City officials.

Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms, and/or legs.

Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; completion of technical or trade school training-ideally with coursework in mechanics or shop-is preferred.

  • Minimum of two to three years of hands-on experience in automotive mechanics and repair is required.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered, provided they demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role.
