The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team at the senior, specialist, or lead level as a key contributor to the maintenance and installation of highway signage and traffic control devices. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting safe travel across the region by assembling, erecting, maintaining, and repairing signs, pavement markings, and related infrastructure. Whether operating independently in the field or leading a crew in a central sign shop, your leadership and expertise will help guide others while ensuring our roadways remain clearly marked and safely navigable for all travelers. Success in this position requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of traffic control standards, the ability to work independently or lead a team, and hands-on experience with tools, materials, and fabrication techniques used in sign and pavement marking maintenance.

What to Expect

This position performs work that is often physical in nature and primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Work duties may be performed at elevated heights, above 300 feet over land or water, and may also work out of a bucket truck up to 50 feet high. Typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. 

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 3 will:

  • Install, repair, and replace signs, sign components, and signposts.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain sign bridges.
  • Remove graffiti from signs and sign hardware; replace and repair wood and steel posts in the field; and wash signs using ladder truck.
  • Fabricate specialty installations; and install wind beam on new signs in preparation for installation. 
  • Conduct day and night sign inspections.
  • Maintain the area sign log. 
  • Order supplies, prepare K-5 estimates for third-party damages, and assign charge codes. 
  • Assist other sign crews and lead or assist road maintenance crews. 
  • Operation of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A equipment, manlift and bucket trucks, dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, rollers, flushers, and truck mounted attenuators.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of highway maintenance, roadway construction, or related experience. 
  • A Class A CDL.  
  • A valid Traffic Control Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging, or ability to obtain within six (6) months. 
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to travel area wide.
  • Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Two (2) years as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 or Maintenance Specialist 2, or four (4) years assisting in the fabrication of signs.

Important Notes 

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2025.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Travel is regularly required within the maintenance area to patrol, inspect, and conduct work activities, or to attend meetings and trainings. Occasional travel is required outside of the area for trainings, conferences, or meetings.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
