Job Description
The Arborist is responsible for maintaining the health, safety, and appearance of all trees and large shrubs on BYU-Idaho's campus. This includes supervising a student crew in tree care and pruning, monitoring for disease and pests, installing seasonal decorations, and maintaining the campus tree inventory database. The Arborist also assists with snow removal during the winter and operates various types of landscaping equipment, including boom trucks and brush chippers.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Education: Requires an Associate's Degree in Horticulture or a related field
Experience: 5+ years in a supervisory position or equivalent experience preferred
Certifications:
- Professional Pesticide Application License for the State of Idaho
- Current ISA certification or ability to obtain one
Skills:
- Strong Communication and leadership skills to effectively supervise and train student employees, many of whom have little to no experience.
- Reliable work ethic and professionalism
- Knowledge of plant life, soils, and arboriculture practices
- Current driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL
- Understanding and application of safety standards when working near trees and buildings
- Ability to use rigging ropes to safely remove trees or limbs
- Knowledge of installing Christmas lights on trees and buildings
- Knowledge of and safe use of Chainsaws
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions
- Frequently climb trees to maintain growth and structure. Working at height frequently and windy or slippery conditions will be prevalent.
- Chainsaws and Hand tools will be lifted into trees to cut branches
- Conditions in working with trees can be hot or cold depending on weather.
- Snow Removal conditions with vary with Weather.
