General Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator - Sludge Truck (CDL-B) driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of sludge transport vehicles and related equipment for the collection, hauling, and disposal of biosolids or wastewater residuals. This role ensures proper handling of materials in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations while supporting daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant and public works facility. This position performs semi-skilled work in the operation of sludge hauling equipment. Responsible for performing tasks of more than average difficulty involving the safe operation and routine maintenance of assigned equipment. Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful. Under general supervision of the Public Utilities Chief Plants Operator and Wastewater Plants Superintendent, employees are required to exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Performance is reviewed in progress and upon completion by observation and through results obtained.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operates sludge trucks and other heavy equipment to haul biosolids from treatment facilities to approved disposal or landfill
Transport sludge, dirt, construction debris, yard waste and other materials to the county landfill, mulching facility, and job sites; transport liquid sludge from one treatment plant to another.
Perform normal maintenance and servicing on equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; maintains accurate logs and documentation as required by DOT and internal policies.
Visually check equipment and report maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the work day, ensure equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.
May perform manual and/or laboring tasks; use hand tools and power tools either separate or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasks being performed.
Follows assigned routes and schedules while maintaining safety, reliability, and environmental compliance
Adheres to all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and regulatory standards (DOT, EPA, OSHA).
Communicates effectively with supervisors, plant staff, and site contacts.
May train or mentor less experienced staff in safe vehicle and equipment operation.
Perform all other related duties as required.
May use tractor to fill sludge containers.
May operate street sweepers, excavators, backhoe, sewer vacuum trucks VAC-CON and a variety of other heavy equipment upon training.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in operating heavy trucks or equipment, preferably within wastewater, public works, or industrial operations.
Licenses and/or Certificates: Valid Florida CDL-B Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Driving Record.
Must have a class "B" CDL with Air Brake and Tank Endorsements. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of safe operating practices for sludge trucks and heavy equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards, and appropriate safety precautions. Knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned area. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and manage time efficiently. Ability to work in confined spaces, around odors, noise, and varying weather conditions. Skilled in routine vehicle inspection, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance. Skilled in the commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance. Skilled in the operation of motorized specialty equipment that may involve lifting of up to 50 lbs. Skilled in the operation of complex motorized equipment that may involve sitting/driving for extended periods. Some positions may involve standing, walking and climbing. Skilled in the use and care of hand and power tools related to assigned area. Skilled in the maintenance and servicing of equipment being operated at assigned areas. Ability to perform work requiring physical strength and endurance. Ability to detect needed repairs and make operation adjustments. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to use a two-way radio. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others that may involve speaking and hearing English language. Ability to act in a lead capacity over other operators and laboring personnel that may involve working under conditions of extreme weather, noxious fumes, insects, excessive noise, and at heights or in confined areas.
Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug/alcohol testing as required and random drug screening.
