MECHANICS HELPER/SMALL EQUIPMENT REPAIRER
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
SUMMARY: Assists mechanic(s) and/or works under the guidance of a mechanic, repairing and maintaining motor vehicles, construction/maintenance/other miscellaneous equipment (repairs brakes, engine, electrical/fuel/hydraulic/transmission/ignition/exhaust/air systems and A/C units, axle assemblies, overhaul of major operating units such as motors, transmissions, differentials; etc.). May work independently in performing minor repairs and maintenance. Maintains and repairs small engine equipment. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and hand/electric/air-driven tools. Assists with data entry into Windows based repair order system. Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires High School graduate or GED with two (2) years' experience in automobile and/or truck maintenance and/or repair. Requires effective communication skills and be detail oriented. Must have general knowledge of principles and practices of fleet maintenance, and methods and techniques used in the maintenance of automotive and heavy duty public works equipment. Familiarity with windows based computer software.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, and perform strenuous activities, and ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Exposed to fumes, odors, and dust. May be exposed to toxic conditions.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: Requires Valid Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that includes the minimum Sub-Classification "B" and valid CDL Medical Card.
BENEFITS: Defined Benefit Pension Plan, generous time off & medical/dental/vision/life insurance package.
WAGES: Starting $27.13/hr. (Increases to $28.46 @6 months, $30.12 @1 year.)
