Overview

The heavy equipment mechanic must diagnose and repair small engines, light, and heavy equipment on site. The mechanic should also be able to perform repairs on equipment while traveling between the landfill and the Transfer Station.

Responsibilities

  • First responder during natural disasters.
  • Required to assist when clearing debris from roads to ensure safe passage for EMS, Police, Fire Dept, and other emergency vehicles.
  • Respond to calls throughout the night.
  • Make the necessary repairs to heavy equipment in attempts to keep operations from bogging down.
  • Repairs various vehicles and equipment, such as eighteen wheelers, roll off units, front loaders, back hoes, trammels, lawn tractors, pump etc.
  • Replace starters. water pumps, bearing, hydraulic hoses, and tarping systems.
  • Use proper methods to prevent stormwater contamination.
  • They have the responsibility and capability to properly communicate directives, give instructions to internal/external customers.
  • Due to the frequency and use of our equipment, the heavy equipment mechanic will ensure each operator performs maintenance on their assigned equipment.
  • Must inspect equipment throughout the day for stress cracks and hydraulic leaks.
  • Rotate joints that need to be tightened and greased throughout the day.
  • Responsible for ensuring a reasonable level of safety for self, the public and the environment.
  • Responsible for the oversight of all safety equipment.
  • Ensure all employees follow the guidelines set forth by the City's policy on safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintain safety protocols when handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to screen numerous types of rubble and brush which is essential due to the types of discarded household waste that come through.
  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Non-Exempt - Full-Time
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Highschool Diploma/GED
  • 2 years related experience

Licenses and Certifications

Required

  • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
  • Class A CDL without restrictions or air brake endorsement within 12 months
  • TCEQ Waste Screening License within 12 months of hire
  • Hazmat endorsement within 18 months of hire

  • Drug Screening: Yes
  • Physical Exam: Yes

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
