The City of Plano is hiring Route Driver I, Route Driver II, or Senior Route Drivers in our Environmental Waste Services team! Summary of Duties

Under basic supervision, the Route Driver I is responsible for operating trucks and specialized equipment used in the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and other materials.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The Route Driver I is the entry-level classification in the Route Driver series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Route Driver II and Route Driver, Senior in that the latter two positions are a higher-level class in the series that operates additional equipment and has more experience performing Environmental Waste equipment operations and routes.

Route Driver I is the entry-level classification in the Route Driver series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Route Driver II and Route Driver, Senior in that the latter two positions are a higher-level class in the series that operates additional equipment and has more experience performing Environmental Waste equipment operations and routes.

The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy and procedures. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transports loads to various refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
  • Operates various heavy specialized equipment.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment for safety checks and to ensure proper performance and operation.
  • Performs routine maintenance for assigned vehicle and equipment; reports any repair needs to supervisor.
  • Inspects incoming loads of yard debris and recycling for contamination.
  • Responds to routine customer inquiries; refers complaints or problems to supervisor as needed.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
The additional duties for the Route Driver II and Senior Route Driver positions:
  • Completion of assigned route duties within scheduled work time.
  • Operates various heavy specialized equipment as needed.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure proper performance and safe operation; performs routine maintenance for assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • May be responsible for training new Route Drivers on all equipment operations.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Operates refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transports loads to various refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
  • Responds to routine customer inquiries.
  • Available to support all EWS Special Event related activities.
Marginal Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • The Route Driver I determines whether assigned vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition and whether any actual or potential safety hazards exist prior to operating. The incumbent determines appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work. The incumbent must determine if materials are in accordance with City ordinances to allow collection.
  • The Route Driver II determines how to meet delivery schedules with available personnel. The incumbent determines whether assigned vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition and whether any actual or potential safety hazards exist prior to operating. The incumbent operates equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate operator's manual and City and departmental policies. The incumbent determines appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work.
  • The Senior Route Driver determines how to meet delivery schedules with available personnel. The incumbent determines whether assigned vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition and whether any actual or potential safety hazards exist prior to operating. The incumbent operates equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate operator's manual and City and departmental policies. The incumbent determines appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Proper operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in the collection of refuse, recycling, yard trimmings, and bulky waste; safety requirements and standards applicable to operating vehicles and equipment; appropriate safety equipment and procedures; applicable ordinances, regulations, and policies regarding the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and yard debris; City of Plano streets and address locations.

Skills and Abilities

Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety policies, procedures, and regulations; completing basic mathematical calculations.

Education

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience

For the Route Driver I position: No experience required. One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment and vehicles preferred.

For the Route Driver II position: Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment and refuse collection trucks.

For the Senior Route Driver position: Four (4) years of experience opera
