Position Title: Senior Work Leader

Department: Parks & Recreation

Division: Park Maintenance

Job Summary

Assigns duties and supervises crews in the maintenance of city parks and facilities. Oversees work in progress and provides instruction and directives to work crews.

Supervisory Responsibility

Integral to the position of Senior Work Leader is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises the mowing, trimming and general maintenance of the park system, including all parks, amenities, and facilities within the system.
  • Oversees work in progress and assists as needed. Provides instructions regarding work methods.
  • Discusses daily assignments with Superintendent of Parks and assigns and schedules work and duties of designated crews.
  • Assists, collaborates with supervisors on special city sponsored events and projects. Remains on call during various city sponsored events involving the park system.
  • Oversees, inspects, allocates, trains employees on operation of equipment for various projects to ensure proper safety and usage is maintained.
  • Assists in evaluating and disciplines employees.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  • May be required to work with or supervising of inmates.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Examples of professional conduct include, but are not limited to, being communicative, informative, fair, honest and respectful.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skills in planning, organizing and directing crews, operation of trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in park maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general park maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates and the public.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually.
  • Three or more years of prior experience required to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of operation of computers, iPad, and other electronic devices.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's license (CDL) required or must have the ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Material and Equipment Directly Used

Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Work is performed under a range of conditions, ranging from extreme cold to very hot, climatic conditions of rain, snow, wind or other extremes. Required to stand for long periods of time, ride and operate motorized equipment over a variety of terrain. Requires good visual and hearing ability as well as acceptable hand/eye coordination in order to safely operate motorized equipment in and around areas frequented by the public. Requires walking over uneven surfaces, bending, squatting and kneeling in performance of duties. Frequently lifts objects weighing up to thirty to 75 pounds and assists in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
