Experienced Paving Crew Member

Summary

The Experienced Paving Crew Member position supports a wide range of paving operations within the company. Individuals hired into this position may be assigned to any of several paving-related roles based on company need, individual experience, and qualifications. Potential assignments include: Paving Laborer, Paver Operator, Screed Operator, Paving Roller Operator, Service Truck Driver, Distributor Truck Operator, or Density Technician.

Paving crew members work on a variety of road construction and paving projects and are expected to perform duties safely, efficiently, and with attention to quality. This is a non-exempt, hourly position that requires working outdoors in varying conditions, often for extended hours and nontraditional shifts.

Essential Functions

Common Functions for All Paving Crew Members

  • Safely operate within active construction zones and around live traffic.
  • Perform pre-shift equipment or vehicle inspections and post-shift maintenance/clean-up as applicable to assigned equipment or duties.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, Foreman, and other project personnel.
  • Follow GOH paving safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Perform manual labor in support of paving operations as assigned (including shoveling, sweeping, tamping, setting traffic control devices, and cleaning work areas).
  • Exercise proper care and maintenance of company equipment and tools.
  • Travel to various job site locations and arrive on time for assigned shift start.
  • Work more than 40 hours per week and nontraditional hours including night shifts, Saturdays, and occasionally Sundays.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by supervisor.

Role-Specific Functions

Paving Laborer

  • Guide trucks into position to discharge asphalt into paver hopper; Nonitor material flow into paver and assist in correcting mat imperfections; Perform site preparation tasks such as marking stations and cleaning surfaces; Set up and tear down traffic control devices; and relieve flaggers as needed.

Paver Operator

  • Operate paver in coordination with crew to ensure proper material flow and mat placement; Adjust paver settings to match project specifications; and Utilize grade and slope control systems such as Topcon.

Screed Operator

  • Operate screed to control mat depth, width, and slope; Perform precise adjustments to achieve project specifications; and, Monitor and adjust material head in front of screed.

Paving Roller Operator

  • Operate roller using appropriate static or vibratory modes; Work with Density Technician to achieve proper compaction and smoothness; and, Perform manual compaction where necessary.

Service Truck Driver

  • Transport service truck and trailer to/from project sites; Maintain inventory of fuel, water, oils, and traffic control supplies; and Fuel and service paving equipment as directed.

Distributor Truck Operator

  • Operate distributor truck to apply tack coat or emulsion at specified rates; Perform test patterns and calibrate application rates; and, Maintain product inventory and perform equipment cleaning.

Density Technician

  • Operate and calibrate nuclear density gauge; Coordinate with Roller Operators to adjust roller patterns and achieve density specifications; and Perform verification tests and prepare documentation for acceptance.

Knowledge Of

  • Paving equipment, tools, and materials applicable to assigned role.
  • Basic principles of asphalt paving and compaction.
  • Communication hand signals used on paving crews.
  • General safety practices in road construction and paving operations.

Ability To

  • Learn and follow GOH company policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Perform basic math and measurement tasks as applicable to the role.
  • Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adapt to changing work conditions and site environments.

Qualifications

  • All positions require successful completion of the PennDOT Flagger Training Course.
  • Some positions require a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements:

o Service Truck Driver requires a valid Class A CDL with tank and hazmat endorsements.

o Distributor Truck Operator requires at minimum a valid Class B CDL with tank and air brake endorsements (Class A preferred).

  • Other positions require or prefer a standard driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Density Technician positions require additional certifications: Necept Bituminous Pavement Field Technician, Nuclear Gauge 8-hour Safety, and HazMat for Nuclear Gauge Transportation.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience

  • Prior paving or heavy equipment experience preferred.
  • Entry-level applicants will be considered for Paving Laborer positions.

Physical Requirements

General Physical Requirements (all paving positions)

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds consistently.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions including heat, cold, dust, and precipitation.
  • Ability to work in environments with noise, vibration, and exposure to petroleum products.
  • Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.

Additional Requirements for Certain Positions

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time (operators, drivers).
  • Ability to physically climb on and off equipment safely.
  • Ability to navigate with limited light during night operations (drivers).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a current Medical Examiner's Certificate (for CDL positions).
  • For Density Technician: ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds consistently; ability to walk long distances.
