Position Purpose

  • Perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent for a day or longer periods of time. Their duties include taking attendance, explaining homework, and maintaining classroom cleanliness. Candidates need to be flexible in their availability.

Essential Job Functions

  • Adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the regular teacher.
  • Follow procedures and achieve lesson goals.
  • Assign and explain homework.
  • Oversee students outside of the classroom including in the hallways and cafeteria.
  • Comply with all school regulations and policies at all times.
  • Take attendance and document daily notes.
  • Ensure classroom and work is kept clean and orderly.
  • Oversee the normal classroom rhythms and activities.
  • Compile a report for the teacher for when he/she returns.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

  • Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications Profile

  • TEACHER SUBSTITUTE: High School diploma or equivalent, a valid Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) Substitute Permit.
  • PARAPROFESSIONAL, CUSTODIAN, FOOD SERVICE SUBSTITUTE: High School diploma or equivalent for substitute.
  • BUS DRIVER SUBSTITUTE: CDL Class B License with Passenger and School endorsements, pass pre-employment drug screen, DOT Physical. The District will provide training, if needed, as well as reimburse the cost of successful licensing.
