Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Equipment Mechanic Specialist position works in the District Three office located in Oakley, KS. This position supervises and performs highly skilled mechanical repairs on heavy and complex equipment. It supervises mechanics in the repair and maintenance of area equipment. It is responsible for managing all aspects of the Area shop including scheduling, prioritizing, and advising subarea maintenance shops on required repairs. This position is responsible for the procurement process of parts purchased for repairs in accordance with State Statutes, Regulations and KDOT requirements.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Diagnoses malfunctions and troubleshoots to determine cause of failure; makes operational tests of systems.
  • Makes working diagnoses of mechanical failure by means of visual & auditory checks & use of test equipment, such as voltmeters, armature growlers, brake testers, test stands, compression gauge testers, ohmmeters and engine analyzers to determine the exact nature of extent of repair or adjustment needed to complete work orders.
  • Removes, disassembles, repairs, adjusts, overhauls, modifies, reassembles, and installs or replaces engine & major assemblies, sub-assemblies, wheel balancing & brake & clutch adjustments.
  • May occasionally perform oxyacetylene and electric welding or blacksmithing, as in forming, bonding & tempering iron & steel.
  • Maintains standard shop records such as timesheets, repair orders and job orders.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three to five years' experience working as a mechanic or a minimum of one year of vocational education that is directly related to the position.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

  • A CDL must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained. KDOT provides CDL training at no cost to the employee.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
  • The selected candidate for this position will be expected to have their own hand tools to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Applicants will be considered for the position without the required tools; however, the required tools must be available for use on the first day of work.
  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT pre-employment/pre-duty drug test as a condition of employment in this position. (This position will also require you to participate in random testing, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.)
  • Any Commercial Driver who has received a Confirmed Positive Result or the Equivalent and has not successfully completed all Rehabilitation Program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position. (Per SOM 2.1.10).
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.
