Requirements

PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Assistant Street Superintendent, the Equipment Operator II operates one or more pieces of construction equipment in the performance of moderately complex construction and maintenance activities. Employees perform routine manual labor as required. Employees receive specific and, in some cases, detailed instructions from Labor Supervisors. Work is performed under established procedures with frequent inspections during progress and final inspection of work completed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prior to operating equipment, performs safety and maintenance inspection of assigned equipment and checks all fluid levels; While equipment is being operated, continuously monitors gauges and other indicators for non-standard conditions; Performs light maintenance and servicing in connection with equipment operated; Notifies supervisor of mechanical or safety problems; May assist mechanic with field repairs; Operates brush loader to load trash, load and set pipe and set storm drain covers; Drives dump truck hauling dirt, sand, gravel, lumber, trash and other materials to or from places of work; Drives tractor drawing large lawn mower to cut right-of-way; Drives pick up on light hauls, drives low boy; Operates equipment such as backhoe, front end loader, dozer or scraper, rollers, broom , asphalt spreader; Operates street sweeper, packers, reclaimers, tar distributor, pavement maintainer; Drives water truck to haul water for new road construction; Operates roller to prepare gravel roads for paving; Operates chip spreader to pave and resurface roads; Drives asphalt distributor to pave and resurface city roads; May assist lesser skilled operators; Explains methods, maintenance and safety measures; Operates chain saw to cut trees from right-of-way; uses axe, brush axe, banjo blade to clear brush; Loads and unloads trucks and cars of dirt, construction materials and supplies; Shovels asphalt, cinders, rock, dirt and other materials; Installs and cleans drain pipes, cleans out driveway culvers and road way, driveway and drainage tiles; Patches pot holes; picks up and piles brush, refuse and other materials; Directs traffic at job sites; Fills sand bags and constructs head walls for culverts; Performs related manual labor as required; Assists tree division as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to communicate information to supervisor and co-workers; Writing skills to complete routine forms and records; Reading skills to understand operator manuals, directives, procedures and instructions; Math skills to perform basic arithmetic operations; Skill in the operation, maintenance, and safe use of trucks and light tractors; Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, packers, spreaders, roller, etc. Knowledge of traffic regulations; Defensive driving skills; Knowledge of safety rules, including accident causation and prevention; Ability to work independently without close supervision; Knowledge of both city and department policies, procedures and rules; Ability to read road signs and operate equipment; Ability to operate levers, gears, etc.; Ability to climb on top of and crawl under various types of equipment; Ability to lift and move 50 lbs.; Reading skills to understand policies, procedures, ordinances, regulations, reports and other applicable guidelines; Willing to work nonstandard hours and overtime as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma and two years of job related experience. Possess a valid Alabama Class B commercial driver's license.
